All of these items can make a long trip into the unknown a much less daunting proposition. What makes the best backpack for travel? One thing that any adventurer craves, especially while traveling by air, is portability. 1. High Sierra Classic Series 59401 Sentinel 65 Internal Frame Pack ($83 on Amazon)

Took it camping this past weekend and I have to say that I don’t think that you can find a better pack for the money ($88 through Amazon.com). Some of my fellow campers could not believe how nice of a bag it was, and were even more surprised when I told them what I paid for it.

This pack is called classic for a reason. Its durable dependability is well documented and cherished by many of the most seasoned adventurers. Available in either dusty auburn or vibrant Pacific this pack, while lacking in many color choices, is still brimming with excellent outdoors conquering features.

Primary amongst these is the High Sierra Classic Series’ inclusion of 3 sturdy compartments that make searching for gear and clothes less of a chore than traditional travel packs. The main compartment boasts a 65 liter carry capacity as well as a “floatable” lid which can adjust to varying internal storage factors. The secondary compartment is smaller, designed for the storage of smaller, but still necessary items such as trail mix, energy bars or other trail snacks. The third compartment of this travelling backpack is at the bottom of the unit. It has a separate zipper and is large enough to contain mid-sized trail items.

Some more useful features of this lightweight backpack are the inclusion of hooks for hanging gear, water bottle netting along the side of the pack, hose fittings for sipping water held in the main compartment and even a rain cover that doubles as a cover for the pack. This cover even includes a sewn on luggage label, for those by-air journeys.

This backpack is amazing. My laptop weighs 20 lbs and I’ve carried it all over the world with plenty of room for other things. This is the best way to travel, rolley bags can’t do what you can do with a internal frame backpack.

Another one of the best travel backpacks available today is the Osprey Farpoint 40 liter bag. 4. Timbuk2 Aviator Travel Backpack ($178 on Amazon)

I travel extensively and go for business, pleasure and exploration (expeditions). I’ve had this out on its first trip. Shoulder and waist straps are very comfortable. Compared to high end backpacks. Much more comfortable that even the best business laptop backpacks. Storage is ample enough for an overnight or two for business and easily a weekend for pleasure (depending on how large your shoes are and how many you take).

Timbuk2 has been making great messenger bags since 1989. Their Aviator travel backpack is a step away from their traditional business offering, but the Timbuk2 quality is clearly still present in this exceptional product. The Aviator is available in 3 different colors: Black, Carbon and Fatigue, each boasting a bright orange interior which helps the owner find items in the bag.

Though it carries less than some of the other packs mentioned in this article (it carries less than 30 liters), the Aviator still manages to impress with its sturdy construction, convenient handles and convertibility. It includes removable yet sturdy straps that latch firmly to the bag’s body. This of all the backpacks in this article is probably one of the friendliest in an airline situation. The Aviator has sturdy handles, its form factor is better tuned for the overhead compartments and its sections are also easy to access.

Compartment wise, the Aviator has one main compartment with 2 access points, 3 more internal compartments and an external. Timbuk2’s packs sturdy construction is a hallmark of their business model, and the Aviator does not fail in this regard, the snaps though made of plastic, are incredibly strong and will persevere through even the toughest usage.

5. Gregory Border 35 ($73 on Amazon)

This is a really great backpack for those who travel with electronics (primarily laptop + accessories). As a standard backpack it checks all the basic requirements: comfortable, adjustable, relative size (25L) and has some basic organizational pockets.

Like the High Sierra, this backpack does not convert. Designed by Gregory, a lesser known hiking pack company, this pack was created to be perfectly functional and trail-ready. Available in Tarmac black or Harbor blue, the color choices may seem scant, but the travel experience this pack will provide will be anything but.

This is probably the best travel backpack for exterior pockets and compartments of all the packs reviewed here. The Gregory Border 35, having a main compartment carrying capacity of 35 liters, has 5 external compartments for stowing various items, the majority of which are created with flexible material. It also has stretchy netted external bags for the quick drying of wet clothes.

A great feature, untypical feature of this pack is the full-length panel loading laptop compartment. This compartment is completely removable, being able to unzip from the body of the unit. Though many travel backpacks have laptop areas, this is one of the rare gems that allows the user to remove the compartment totally, for added convenience in TSA scanners, which can make airport life much more convenient.
